Dear reader, please click the YouTube link below to listen to a magnificent Portuguese lullaby sung by Monsterrat Figueras, and let her ethereal voice accompany you as you read the poem. You’ll understand why.

with the bedtime story told  — (yes, your favourite, of a child so bold) —  and the lullaby sung  — (yes, your favourite, in our ancestors’ tongue) —  with the curtains rolled and the night light on you drift quietly into dimday sleep and your last request is but a drowsy murmur which I answer as I always answer yes I’ll sit with you a while and let you fill my ageing heart with innocence and purpose while this day’s memory of sweet caramel vanilla joy and an all too brittle cooky cone still travels on your breath
